If you’ve talked to me at all this past week, you’ve probably heard me rave about Gretchen Rubin’s book, Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives. I loved Rubin’s other two books, but this is the one that really clicked for me.
We all want to improve our habits, right? Most of us want to eat better, exercise regularly, stop procrastinating, keep our homes cleaner…. the list goes on and on. We try to build good habits, but oftentimes those attempts don’t last. I know I’ve got a string of failed improvements in my past, and I would bet that you do, too. We want to change, but how?
Rubin tackles this problem by first helping readers figure out what “type” of habit keeper they are. She calls the different types The Four Tendencies. (You can take a quiz on her website to determine your tendency.) Once you know your tendency, you can figure out the best method for keeping your habits. Figuring out the methods that work best for how you’re wired is key to having success with forming habits.
Once your tendency is determined, Rubin goes into the details of making changes for your type. I learned so much about myself through this process, including:
- I am an Obliger, which means I need external accountability to reach my goals.
- I am an Abstainer, which means it’s easier for me to completely cut something out rather than moderate my intake.
- I value simplicity over abundance.
- My success with changing habits relies heavily on convenience.
And that’s just the surface. I feel empowered to make some changes that previously just seemed to hard to make. And if you’re like me and struggle with forming good habits, I think this book will speak to you, too.
I loved this so much, and was so helped by it, that I want to pass it on. I am giving away one copy of Better Than Before to a lucky reader. You can use the Rafflecopter form below to enter. Good luck!
Gretchen Rubin has written two other great books, The Happiness Project and Happier At Home. I’m also lusting after her one-sentence journal for moms, and am now a devoted listener of her podcast. This is not a sponsored post; this book truly improved my life and I want it to do the same for you.
