If you have young children in your house, there’s a good chance that your children have developed an allegiance to a particular 24 hour children’s programming network. Some families are Nick Jr. families; some are Sprout families. For a long time, we were a PBS Kids family, but recently my boys have been all about Disney Junior. When they get TV time, they want to watch Doc McStuffins, Jake, or the super creepy Special Agent Oso.
When you see these shows repeatedly (because there seem to be only six episodes that get shown over and over again), you start to learn them and form opinions on them. Sometimes, very strong opinions. Embarrassingly strong. Thankfully, my friend Amanda also has strong opinions about all things Disney Junior. We regularly have deep discussion about plot holes, character development, and how much we hate Spookley: the Square Pumpkin. Seriously. We’d send each other warning texts when that stupid show was on.
The following is a 100% real conversation we had about Sofia the First:
Amanda: During the Sofia commercial a few mins ago I screamed at Amber to shut up.
Me: I am so on the fence with her. Like, sometimes I think she’s kind of fierce, but then other times she’s such a brat.
Amanda: Yeah. I don’t always dislike Amber. But dude stealing Sofia’s magic amulet is not cool.
Me: Here’s the thing. Every bad guy on this show has been trying to steal that amulet, and the one who does her dirty is her SISTER. That’s not cool. But then I think, “BRILLIANT, Disney. Just brilliant.” Because who would’ve ever thought?
Amanda: Hahahaha OMG YOU ARE RIGHT
Me: I’m kind of pissed that I didn’t think of it.
Amanda: Me, too. You really dropped the ball.
Me: I think I missed my calling as a Disney Junior writer.
Me: Also. I need to know your thoughts on this Florence Nightingale Doc McStuffins. I haven’t seen it yet obvs. But it feels forced.
Amanda: Yes. Yes. I think it’s crap.
THESE ARE REAL CONVERSATIONS I HAVE WITH MY FRIENDS. I think we can all consider this proof that I need a day off, right? If you don’t watch Disney Junior on the regular, you may be wondering what the heck is wrong with us. And if your house is a Disney Junior house…you’re still probably wondering what is wrong with us.
Amanda and I will be live tweeting the Sofia the First: The Curse of Princess Ivy on November 23rd at 7 p.m. EST. Follow us and join in the fun! You can find Amanda on Twitter at @thebookprincess, and you can follow me at @mom4less. What kids shows drive you crazy? Let me know in the comments.
