Dear Oldest Child,

The day we’ve been counting down for months has come and gone, and now you are five. When I held you as a newborn, I don’t think I really believed that this day would come. Five sounds so old; I can’t call you a baby, toddler, or even preschooler anymore. You are five. Heading to kindergarten. Ready to take on the world.

Now You Are Five

And man, are you asserting your independence! When you don’t want to do something, you’ll start negotiating, or just outright refuse. Then there’s a showdown between two stubborn people: you and me. You currently think potty talk is HILARIOUS, and I have to remind you about 100 times a day that we don’t yell in the house. Because you love to yell for absolutely no reason. I just had to tell you to “stop spazzing out,” because you have clearly lost your mind.

Now You Are Five

But these complaints are minor, really. Yes, some days you frustrate me to tears, but every day you make me smile. You’re so smart, and more important, you love to learn. Your 542375497 questions a day can wear me out, but you really want to know everything about everything. And you’re so kind and caring. When your brother misses out on a reward for good behavior, you offer to share yours. You’re a people person, a giver, and compassionate beyond your five years. You have taught me so much about love, grace, and mercy.

Keep doing what you’re doing, kid. Learn all you can. Don’t miss an opportunity to help someone else. And when you get scared, remember that God has got your back. I know that you struggle with fear, and that’s ok. But never let your fears keep you from opportunities to learn and grow. I am so proud of you every time you try something that scares you. I am proud of you every day, and I am so fortunate to be your mom. I gave you life, but you have given back to me so much more. Thank you for being my amazing, wonderful, silly, sassy, completely awesome son.

Love,

Mommy
