The thought of having a daughter terrifies me. Not because I don’t like girls, but because I was one. I struggled with my self-esteem as girl. The tween and teen years were hard for me, as I’m sure they were for a lot of you. Despite the support of two great parents, I had a hard time finding my voice.
That’s why I think Girls Rock! Indianapolis is awesome. What’s Girls Rock! Indianapolis? I’m glad you asked.
Girls Rock! Indianapolis is a non-profit organization dedicated to building positive self-esteem in girls and encouraging creative expression through music. Our music education programs provide girls with an opportunity to participate in an environment that fosters leadership, encourages social change, and cultivates a supportive community of female peers and mentors.
So Girls Rock does two really awesome things: it teaches girls music, and it empowers them by equipping them with leadership skills and an opportunity to express themselves. Fantastic, right?
My friend Twinkle is on the board of Girls Rock! Indianapolis, and is the mom of a GRI camper. Here’s why she’s passionate about this great organization:
As a parent of a camper, I was thrilled to see the positive and lasting impact GRI had on my daughter. It really gave her a new sense of self. She loves music, but she learned she was powerful, too. And pretty darn good bass player!I really wanted to be involved, too, and had such a blast volunteering as camp DJ last summer. It was a blast to see girls of all ages dancing to records they’d never heard and learning about new music.
