When I first heard my friends raving about the benefits of coconut oil, I immediately went out and bought a jar. Who wouldn’t love a product with so many great uses?
That jar sat in my cupboard for three months.
I was clearly intimidated by the coconut oil. I had been told it could do EVERYTHING, but I couldn’t figure out one thing to do with it. I finally broke open my jar when a friend started raving about how oil-pulling had improved the condition of her teeth and gums. Since I’ll do anything to avoid going to the dentist, I decided to give it a shot. And once my jar of coconut oil was open there was no turning back. I now use coconut oil the way the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding used Windex.
I recently had a chance to sample coconut oil from Skinny and Co., and I was really impressed by it. Skinny is 100% raw, extra virgin coconut oil. That means this stuff is PURE. Here’s a little bit more about how Skinny makes their oil:
Our coconuts are grown in the rich soil of the Ben Tre province in Vietnam. This area is totally un-commercialized and sits virtually untouched by the modern world. Our coconuts are hand picked by the locals and brought to us. This factory is a small, controlled environment that ensures our product is never heated. We have an elite, closed dehumidifying system that extracts the moisture out of the fruit while leaving all of the raw nutrients of the coconut intact. It is never heated while being pressed, which once again ensures that those important medium chain triglycerides and lauric acid get to you completely unheated. We call this specially designed process our Nutralock Technology and feel that it is one of the many reasons our coconut oil is the best on the market.
Coconut oil is great for cooking, but I have used it most for health and beauty purposes. Hair, skin, teeth, nails – coconut oil can replace almost every beauty product you own. That makes coconut oil a big money saver. And since it’s all natural, you’re protecting your health and the health of your family. Here are five ways I love to use coconut oil:
Protecting little cheeks – Indiana winters are cold, and my boys’ cheeks get dry and chapped if I don’t put something on them before we go outside. Coconut oil protects their faces, keeps them moisturized, and is natural and gentle.
Deep conditioner – I slather some coconut oil on my hair a couple of hours before I wash it, and then shampoo as usual. Doing this once a week has kept my hair soft this winter.
Shaving oil – Instead of commercial shave gel, I’ve been using coconut oil when I shave my legs. It keeps my skin soft and keeps away razor burn.
Oil-pulling – Also known as “swishing some coconut oil around in your mouth.” I do this after I brush my teeth; it’s a great alternative to mouthwash. (Ask your dentist before trying; certain types of fillings don’t do well with oil-pulling.)
Diaper rash lotion – Coconut oil is great for protecting little bottoms, and it helps diaper rash heal quickly. We’ve also used it on skin rashes with great results
Coconut oil is great on its own, but it’s also a key ingredient in several DIY beauty product recipes. I use it to make my own antiperspirant, but that’s just the beginning of what you can create. Here are some favorite recipes I’ve found using coconut oil:

Skinny Coconut Oil was kind enough to provide me with a jar of their awesome coconut oil. All opinions and obsessive oil use are my own.
