One of our family’s favorite summer pastimes is to stop and enjoy a bowl of ice cream after a long day of playing outside. However, our youngest son was diagnosed with a dairy allergy in January, so we are experiencing our first summer without ice cream as an option. Not being able to go out for ice cream is certainly a “first world problem,” but we definitely miss having those summer outings. It’s not just about the ice cream (we have some dairy-free alternatives at home), it’s about the time together – sitting down somewhere special and enjoying each other’s company.

Yumz Gourmet Frozen YogurtI was recently invited to have some friends join our family at the new Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt in Indianapolis (5335 E. Southport Rd., Ste. 700) to preview the store and taste-test their yogurt. I was pleased to find out that Yumz always offers two sorbet options in their stores, so our whole family could enjoy a cool treat together. In a food allergy home, this is a big deal! Yumz also always makes sure to provide one flavor that is “no sugar added.” I know these seem like minor details, but for us this is huge. A company that makes an effort to accommodate those with food allergies will almost always win my business.

The dairy-free option is not the only reason I’ve become a Yumz fan.

I mean, there’s lots of options for frozen yogurt out there (most of which I’ve tried), so what makes Yumz different? It all comes down to one thing at Yumz – the taste. I’ve never had yogurt that was as full of flavor as the yogurt at Yumz. Other frozen yogurt is good, but this yogurt is delicious. One thing we were told during our visit was that flavor is the most important thing at Yumz, and it certainly shows.

The yogurt is good enough that you don’t really need any toppings…

but the selection of Yumz Frozen Yogurttoppings at Yumz is impressive. They have just about every nut, fruit, chocolate bar, and candy imaginable. It was hard to decide what I wanted, but I ended up going with Peanut Butter (SO DELICIOUS!) and Red Velvet yogurt with Reese’s Pieces, peanut butter chips, chocolate sprinkles, and Butterfinger toppings. It was creamy and delicious, and I ate every bit of it. My oldest son had mint yogurt with marshmallows, and my youngest had raspberry pomegranate sorbet with marshmallows and Skittles (whatever floats their boats…). Because frozen yogurt is full of protein, calcium, vitamin B-2 and B-12, potassium and magnesium, I don’t mind letting them add some candy to the top. Yumz has full nutrition information on their website, so you can see for yourself how frozen yogurt is a healthier choice if you want a sweet treat.

Not only is the yogurt delicious…

yumz_kidsWhile I appreciate the selection and quality of ingredients at Yumz, I think the thing I was most impressed with was the great family atmosphere. I had several friends there, and all of us had young children with us who were very excited about sampling the yogurt. The staff at Yumz never batted an eye or acted like we were an annoyance, rather, they welcomed us and interacted with our kids. Owner Donna Laker and Yumz Co-Founder John Barnes sat down with us and answered all of our questions about the company and the yogurt. I truly feel that Yumz is somewhere that my (sometimes rowdy) family will feel welcomed and will receive great customer service. Great product and great customer service are a win for me every time. We will definitely be visiting Yumz again soon!
