Before kids, before husband, there were puppies.

Thumper and Scout

Specifically, my two shelter rescues, Thumper and Scout. These two ragamuffins have been members of my family since 2004, before I got married and long before I had kids. They were my first babies, and they are just as much a part of our family today. I have never once regretted our decision to adopt from a shelter. I’ve also been so thankful for all the resources that Indy Humane provides to our community. We’ve taken advantage of their obedience classes, as well as their low-cost vaccination clinic. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they all truly care about the animals. I would tell anyone thinking of getting a dog or cat: “don’t shop, adopt!” – and I’d send them to Indy Humane to find their new family member.

Mutt Strut 2013On April 27th, Mutt Strut will be hitting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Mutt Strut is the largest single fundraiser that Indy Humane holds each year, and it’s incredibly important because of all of the great work Indy Humane does for animal welfare. Indy Humane is a local, independent organization that is not affiliated with any national humane societies. Indy Humane relies on the support of the fabulous animal lovers of Indianapolis to be able to do all that they do in our community.

So what is Mutt Strut? It’s a chance to walk your pup around the 2.5 mile track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, while raising money for this great organization. You can pre-register online, or register the day of the event. The regular pre-registration fee is $35 for ages 16 and over and $20 for ages 8-15.  Children ages 7 and under are free, but do not receive a T-shirt. Registration is also available day of the event at $40 for ages 16 and over and $25 for ages 8-15. Senior citizens age 60 or older will receive a $5 discount from the adult registration price. On race day, the gates open at 9:30 a.m., and you’ll find lots of fun family events all day long! Mutt Strut happens rain or shine.

You’ll see pets dressed up in all different kinds of outfits, but be sure to stop by the Indiana’s Family of Farmers booth to get your dog his very own IFOF Doggie Bandana. This is a great event to do as a family, especially if your kids are animal lovers like mine! There’s lots more information and a great FAQ on the Mutt Strut website, and you can also stay informed by following Mutt Strut on Facebook and Twitter. I hope to see you and your four-legged friend looking your very best on April 27th!
