One thing that is very important to me is teaching my children that the world is much bigger than their backyard. I want them to know more about the world around them, and to experience different cultures. I want them to be well-rounded people who have respect and appreciation for people all over the world, no matter where they come from or what they look like. Who doesn’t want that for their kids? I think it’s something most parents hope to teach their children. Encouraging children to consider situations and people other than their own builds empathy and allows our children to comfortably interact with a variety of people.
But how do we do that? My last name’s not Jolie; we can’t afford to fly around the globe and experience the countries of the world first hand. Thankfully, there’s an opportunity for families right here in Indianapolis to get a taste of the world’s cultures. We can travel to one place and end up traveling the world, all in one day!
Indy International Festival
The 36th Annual Indy International Festival is coming to the Indiana State Fairgrounds November 16-18, 2012. Local families will get to experience many different people, places, and cultures in one place. Over 50 ethnic groups will be represented at this event. Your family will get to taste the food, hear the music, and see the dances and clothing of the many ethnicities than have come together to make Indianapolis a diverse and beautiful place.
My family is looking forward to seeing the international landmarks that are being re-created by the Indiana LEGO builders. I’m also excited to hearing Celtic music and seeing Irish dancers perform on Friday night. I think my boys will love the giant walk-upon National Geographic map of Europe. And let’s be honest, mommy and daddy are going to enjoy the International Beer & Wine Garden. I know we’ll all have a great time, and in the process we’ll learn more about our community and our world.
