The DIY Febreze recipe I found on Pinterest worked so well (and saved me so much money), that I decided to move on and try something a little more involved: DIY Dishwasher Detergent. We have very hard water, so I was worried that this one might not work out so well for us.

I followed the link from this pin, and found a great recipe on DIY Natural. I followed their directions, but instead of citric acid I used Lemishine, because I already had it. I used a full cup for our hard water, as suggested. I was also sure to fill up our rinse agent compartment with white vinegar.

Our results so far have been great. We previously used name brand gel packs paired with Lemishine in our dishwasher, and I really see no difference between the name brand detergent and our homemade version. And it is CONSIDERABLY cheaper than those little gel packs!

Another great thing about DIY dishwasher detergent is that the ingredients are so versatile. Things like Borax, washing soda, and white vinegar have a ton of other household uses. And who can’t find something tasty to do with kosher salt? I just used Borax to scrub out my refrigerator this week, so I can attest to its usefulness. Having just a few products that can do multiple things increases the value of your purchase, and is just another step closer to frugality.

This Pinterest pin gets my highest recommendation. Try it out and let me know your thoughts!
