Oftentimes people will ask me why, in addition to working full time, writing for awesome sites like Prime Parents’ Club, and doing freelance writing and PR work, I still continue to keep up with my personal blog. There are many answers to that question, but one reason is that I love people, and this blog has given me the opportunity to connect with many talented, creative, and wonderful people.
One of those wonderful people is Bonnie Kempf. Bonnie is a mom who lives in Noblesville, and she is passionate about photography. It’s easy to see why; Bonnie has been blessed with an amazing talent for taking photographs. She was kind enough to let me interview her to find out more about her and her business, Bonnie Kempf Photography.

Tell me a little bit about you and your family.
Bill and I have two boys:  our older son just turned 10 and our younger son is 7 1/2; I’m not entirely sure how that’s possible, though, because I swear they were 4 and 1 1/2 only yesterday. 😉  We enjoy museums, books, visiting parks, and swimming.  In the summer, it’s hard to get the kids away from the neighborhood pool!
How did you get started taking pictures?
My first camera was a pink Kodak that I took everywhere – I loved taking pictures of everything!  I remember waiting for the film to be developed (it seemed to takes years!) and it was like Christmas morning when I finally got to open the envelope of photographs.  Photography is something that’s always given me great joy.
What are your favorite things to photograph?
People!  I especially enjoy children because they’re so honest and candid that they sort of bring everything around them to life.  Newborn photography is almost magical to me; you blink and those precious moments are gone!  Being asked to capture those earliest moments with my camera is such an honor.  Family photography is a lot of fun because you have this small group of people with their own rhythm and dynamic.  It’s great to share in those moments, even if only for a few hours. 🙂
Why did you decide to start your own business?
Because I absolutely love photography and there is nothing I’d rather be doing!  When our first son was born, I was taking thousands and thousands of photos every month of him.  I wanted to capture those first smiles, the color of his eyes, his tiny feet and hands…everything.  I wanted to capture every expression so I could look back someday and remember him exactly as he was.  Before long I was snapping photos of friends’ children and a few close friends encouraged me to think about starting up a photography business.  But it’s tough with an infant…and before too long we had two small children.  My passion for photography just kept growing and growing.  When I would think about what I really wanted to do with my life, I kept coming back to photography.  Last summer, over nine years later, the timing was as right as it was ever going to be so I decided to go for it.  I haven’t looked back!  Every time I am taking photos for someone, I can’t help but think, “I have the best job in the world!”  How lucky can I be? 🙂

What do you love about photography?
I love getting to know people.  I love capturing the silly smiles and quiet, pensive looks.  I love trying to get that perfect shot–the one that captures a person’s personality or a family’s bond.  There isn’t anything about photography that I *don’t* like! 🙂
